what do I do with my soil over winter?
« on: October 09, 2009, 12:36 »
I am confused (as usual).   We are now just pulling up the remainder of our crops in our plot and some of these areas have been roughly dug and weeded when the plants were taken out.

I am only overwintering garlic, onions and maybe peas, but what should I do with the rest of the soil?

The manure we are getting will have to be stacked over winter and applied in spring, so do we cover it to stop it becoming a flat wedge of mud, leave it open for the cold to break down the soil?

Can we doo any digging in the winter or will we damage the soil
????
help???

I always dig in my (horses) manure this time of year, as I find the cold and frost kills any bugs it.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

Think it depends what sort of soil you have; winter digging used to be done to break up the soil and incorporate manure, but if your soil is light and sandy it doesn't need breaking up and the manure would tend to wash away in the winter rains anyway.

Heavy clay soils can be damaged by compaction when wet, and digging them when in that state is blooming hard work!

You have already said you don't intend to manure 'till spring so having already roughly dug I would just leave it to the elements now and put myself in a warm corner in the living room by the TV!

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
