I know it is a bit worrying the first time you clip a wing, we were both nervous about it. Honestly, though, there is nothing to it. Once you have done it you will wonder why you worried - we did

Even with a wing clipped some can still fly (albeit not as well) but mine still managed to fly over 3 foot high by climbing up onto their coup and then launching themselves. So it may be best if you move your compost bin away from the fence

My crested hen has clipped wing and can jump and flutter over 3 foot wire fence from off the ground take off. I have completely given up trying to bar her from anything. She has such determination, nothing is fullproof! ! !  This fence was to stop the chickens trashing our half of the garden. We have not really succeeded, but at least its not as bad as the half they have got. The lawn disappeared after the first six months. Like most people though, I would not like to be without the chickens now. They are part of the family and everyone loves them and their eggs!
