I gave up on the daleks. I have 2 round ones and their trap door is smaller than Snaps. They'll end up composting the gazillion twigs I have around my property. In its place I built a load of square 'rings' that I can stack on each other as needed and its working beautifully. Already have one lovely load with 2 more on the go.

Apart from all the other good stuff, I empty my hoover into mine - very satisfying
I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

We got four hens this year, :) so lots of luverly Chick poo for the compost heap  :D. However their poo tray in the coop is lined with fresh wood shavings is it OK to compost this as well or should I dispose of it seperately once the poo has been removed?

I put paper under the chooks at night - the FT works very well - high tensile strength in that pink paper LOL then it gets lifted and popped into the compost bin in the mornings.  Quick tidy and recycling :) Good fo rhe compost too ......

Just emptied our dalek too - loverly stuff!!!! (Just lifted the plastic right  off  and shovelled :)

Highfield, so do you put the paper in as well? doesn't this result in a lot of newspaper in your compost. How quickly does it rot down?

We used to put shredded paper in with our chickens (haven't got chickens any more). It breaks down nicely in the compost as does cardboard which I add quite liberally nowadays.

Hi steaders, yes u can put newspaper in the compost and cardboard and shavings. I tend to rip it up a bit to help it! ive learned from this site that compost should "cook" for a good 6 months to a year. all the chicken poo is great for it as well. Luverly stuff !

They get through about 3 sheets a day but it is crumpled not flat so has air mixed in and seems to mix with all the green stuff very well.  Besides after it has been under our chucks all night you wouldn't want to iron it and read it, or put it in the recycle bin! .The chicken poo seems to get a good start with rotting it all down, as does OH's pee - his directional ability is key here *grin*.  Any odd bits unrotted will get put into the current bin but we found none to speak of in the dalek.  Next, one of the pallet bins is gonna be emptied so we shall see how that has got on.  For a couple of months in winter we shove it in bottom of  the bean trench though as well.
