My wild life sanctuary
« on: September 18, 2009, 11:00 »
Today we have worked on my wild life sanctuary in the front garden. It is 2 foot wide and 30 foot long. planted some ornamnetal grass, and some other plants that are good for bees, butterflies and other insects. Earlier in the season when we moved in in feb, we planted some heebes. And all summer they have been blooming and have bumble bees and honey bees in them all the time. also sown corn flowers and some poppey for the butter flies for the summer months.

Cheers

Ty, so much. I apriciate it. i love watching the wild life in the morning. Have loads of spiders, and other wild life in the front garden now, even though I am petrefied of spiders if the come too close I make habitats for them in the garden because they have a place there and do a good job.

Cheers

Sedum Spectabile is highly recommended for attracting squadrons of butterflies assorted.  A pleasant autumn show in its own right and nowhere near as overpowering physically as Buddleia which is the usually recommended butterfly magnet.  Easy to get going and then safely left to it's own devices as it naturalises.

Cotoneaster horizontalis (herringbone form easy grown) is a useful one to take up very little space if grown along a wall preferably in the sun.  Really pleasant alive with bees when flowering and readily accessible supply of winter food in the berries.

Sitting in the sunshine today, the tail end french marigolds seemed to be doing a roaring trade in the attraction of insects stakes - hone bees, bumblies, butterflies, hoverflies, the lot.

That said, that you expressly doing anything specifically for wildlife conservation puts you ahead of almost all of the rest of us!  Well done C.

Ty, for the tips will. see if I can fin them for the spring instead of the budlia's.

My passion for wild life been life long and living close to nature a dream that I now have fullfilled. So I feel it is only right I give something back to nature. We live a low impact living. and this is how we try and give something back to mother earth.
