sick orpington 36 weeks old
« on: September 19, 2009, 18:31 »
Can anyone help I have a poorly chuck,my buff 36 week old orpington, she is not eating
crop looked full, and felt fairly hardish, massaged it and gas escaped from her mouth, she has lost weight only wants to peck at grass, she huddles away from the other chickens, her comb is pale very lethargic and has not laid for a while now, I have given her vitamins in her drinking water which she does take she likes brown bread as a little treat but wont even have that just not interested, can anyone come up with any suggestions of what it could be or what to do that will help, as I would hate to loose her.

Did you get a chance to smell the gas ??? I'm thinking sour crop if it smelt fowl :(

Try her with some live yogurt and have a read through the info here:

The best bet for your girl is to get her to a good poultry vet as soon as poss :)

Best of luck with her :)

Hi Sarah
checked her again felt her crop and it is empty as my son thought it was full and no smell from the gas when massaged, I have wormed her really worrid she might not be here in the morning, and as she is a pure breed she was vacinated as a chick for various deseases, from the breeder. All the rest are fine.

Hi Sarah,
when she had a poo it was dark brown and being a orpington with a fluffy bum no runs or anything to see and because she is not eating very little or no poo, have you ever come across this before or heard of it  before. that one of the other hens did go for her but nothing nasty I hope, as I said did worm her tonight made sure she took it as put the liquid in a dropper and put it down her throat, sounds cruel and awful but it had to be done, just incase of a worm infestation and I have had a problem like many others with red mite but hopenow they have all gone been cleaning all week used poultry shield and diacom which was recommended what now thanks for your help your a star,
Marcia.

Can you keep her somewhere away from the others? Somewhere you can be certain there is no redmite?

She may be really anemic if you've had mites :(  Poultry drink is a good thing to have at times like this it contains plenty of iron and supposedly helps improve appetite :) It worked with my poorly duck but then she might have been getting better anyway ???

Hope she perks up for you

Sarah :)
