New hen not laid yet!
« on: September 17, 2009, 15:45 »
Hi

I have been given some Black Rock chickens, Mum, Dad and 8 young.  The young are about 3 and a half months old so I know they wont be laying yet but thought that Mum might have laid by now.  I have had them a week and they have really settled in well.  They are all eating and drinking well and i have put some poultry life guard in the water to help them feel well and flourish.

Can anybody help me? I am probably being far to impatient but am so looking forward to that first egg!!!  :nowink:

I think i put this on the allotment side first oops!!!

They are getting layers pellets in the morning and then some veg/fruit scraps or a bit of bread in the afternoon.  They have a good size run to scratch in and have a dust bath area as well.

Hi,
they need to have acces to layers pellets all day, it is not unusall this time of year for chickens to stop laying, sometimes after a moved it can also take them a while to get back into routine.

Thanks Michelle

I put the layers pellets out in the morning and just put it away at night to stop the vermin. They can eat what they want. I was just unsure as these are my first chickens and just wanted to make sure i wasn't doing something really wrong :(

Are the adults losing any feathers?

No the adults have super shiny feathers, there are some smaller fluffy feathers about but no big outside feathers.

They could be moulting, but sometimes even if hens are happy when they have moved, or even a change in the brand of layer pellets can effect the egg laying.

Just think of the enjoyment when you spot that first egg in the nest box, everyone on here loves pictures, so don't forget your camera  :D
