"
Cauliflowers,variety Candid Charm."
I second
Candid Charm, I've had good results with that this year.
"
and also more beetroot, cant seem to get enough of the stuff for some strange reason"
We didn't have enough from early sowings, and my successional sowings were ... errrmmm ... not very successional! So later sowings I have grown 3 plants per 9cm pot - whereas before I had one in the middle and a "spare" on the edge just-in-case the main one failed, and that was removed before planting out.
With later sowings I have grown 3 around the edge of the pot. Planted out at the normal spacing and two of the three pulled for early pickings. That's given me more wiggle room on the successional bit
I'm going to plant more Sweetcorn, but successionally. I had previously thought it was hard to get a Sweetcorn crop to maturity in the UK - but I think that's just 'cause I haven't grown it for 10 years and the Breeders have sorted that problem in the meantime. I have grown Swift this year and had excellent results.
But we had a struggle to eat the cobs from 20 plants before the harvest period finished, so I'm going to try blocks of 9 sown 01-May, 15-May and 01-Jun - plus two crops 21-Mar and 7-Apr for the greenhouse - that was a great success this year.
Also Mini-pop corn for the kids - 7Apr and 21Apr to crop under glass and 01May and 15May outdoors.
"
I think I may try a patch of sweetcorn for the first time...Are they worth the space?"
The Super-sweet variety "Swift" was a major success here this year - but only picked just at the time the chef was ready to boil them and had the pan on the stove already boiling. I have read that you can pick them and chuck them straight into a bucket of water (outer cobs leaves still on) for 30 minutes then barbecue. Not tried that though.
