Watering Beans - top or bottom?
« on: May 09, 2007, 13:46 »
Friends have been giving me conflicting "advice"   one says water beans from the top and another says only water from the bottom.  What is the best way please :?:

I think there is a school of thought which reckons that watering from above helps pollination.  Can't see it myself & neither can the RHS : http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0800/runner_beans.asp

Watering Beans - top or bottom?
i was taught to water from the bottom till the flowers start to come and then mist the flowers to help them set. However the beans will grow 6ft plus and i cant hold my watering can that high, so common sense will guide you. [That and WG hat doffing as i type  ]
If you cant be a good example then you must  be a horrrible warning........

To sit on the fence is not an option

I always water from the bottom to prevent fungus forming on damp leaves. As for the pollinating part, I still have that oceanfront property in central London available

Another 8 inches on mean sea levels and you will be more correct than you know ...

I know, WG. It's a rather scary thought. The huge city of Montreal in Quebec (province) is at sea level on a major inlet river, so even an inch can start becoming disastrous. Considering London was built on a bog in the first place leaves room for much speculation.
