home made nest box part 2
« on: September 07, 2009, 19:06 »
heres part 2 of the nest box story  i am now trying this .

i have decided to try this an see if it works . i weighted down the insert trays with a large lump of wood an they fit just nicely into the plastic boxes and theres enough room at the bottom for the eggs to roll away , if it doesnt work to well that way with the eggs then i will  cut a little hole at the front of the grey boxes an hope they then roll into the L  shape hideaway i made the other day .

as a friend said to me why not fit the inserts inside the trays as they are already used to them so i am hoping they will adjust to the inserts being there as well  :D

i presume no bedding or esle the egg doesnt roll away as it will get stuck on the bedding all i can do is try this way if this doesnt work i will just have to put up with broken eggs  . i have 5 of these so it will be a good experiment to see with or without bedding .

Are their shells too thin? or is it just that they lay in one box?
Staffies are softer than you think.

guys guys guys it worked  :D :D :D :D . the girls are back up and laying good { 13 eggs } out of 16 adults but it looks like either one of the babes isa brown an light sussex are also laying had 2 eggs today that were very small an both totally different colours  :D. righ back to boxes  i went in at 10 am to check an there was 4 eggs in one box unforuntaly one was broken and i cant quite tell wether the girls broke it or it was a thin shelled one i do get those ever few weeks . then at 2.30 pm i had 5 eggs i one tray [ always the corner box } an 3 were just poking out so i have sawn of the pointed end to the insert trays an hoping the eggs will roll down an force each one into the tray further an also around the edges , then this afternoon i was in and out of the house and my maran was sitting i must say quite uncomfortably in the tray an laid an egg which roll right away an the poor girl was trying to get to it and she could not quite manage it   but its still early days yet i cant wait for tomorw now  :tongue2:

Like you said Looby, you don't put bedding in there or the egg won't roll.  It's not uncomfortable for them to squat on the plastic.  they only spend a long time in there if they are broody!!!
