Noisy chicks!
« on: September 04, 2009, 17:15 »
Our 5 chicks are only 2 days old, but seem to be getting increasingly noisy!

We incubated the eggs, and they are in a brooder in our house, but one or two in particular keep making a loud cheeping noise!.

I hope the neighbours don't complain!

they cheep more if they are cold apparently.  Is the temperature ok?
If it is they are just noisy kids, like most  :)

Agree with SMD66, a sharp, persistent cheeping usually means distress of some kind.

yep i also agree if there cold they will cheep until you do something i find a layer of wood shavings and a T-towl over that and under the brooder works well.

If you are using a lamp to keep them warm you can try lowering it a bit. My experience showed that having the lamp low means they can get right under it if they are cold but also need the space to move away from it if they are too hot. They can then choose. I weaned them off very gradually over weeks.

We kept ours in the study and the gentle cheeping was very soothing. I am sure our stress levels were lower because of it. Perhaps it's what every office should have ;) ;)

The temperature is about 34 degrees under the lamp, we have a fireglow bulb in it.
I tried lowering the lamp slightly, but it made no difference.

It seems to be only one chick running round the brooder cheeping liodly and trying to jump up the side.  Occasionally one other chick joins in the cheeping.

When someone goes up to the cage it seems to be quiet.

Luckily it is quiet on a night time (so far).

The noisy chick looks fine, so maybe its just an attention seeker?
