Soil acidity
« on: September 03, 2009, 18:52 »
I've been happily assuming that my soil was acidic, I based this on the weeds I have, creeping buttercup, dandelions, docks and nettles to mention a few. Today I found my test kit (which was buried in the "really useful things" box) and tested the soil.

According to this its 7.5 - 8 (green with a blue tint)    I guess this explains my scabbed spuds then, that'll teach me not to check the obvious.  Bad news is Im going to have to fanny about preparing a acid bed for the blueberry bushes I've just ordered  :(

If you want to change the soil from alkaline to acid, use Flowers of Sulphur. Available from the chemist. Also, don`t trust these shop bought testing kits too much. Plants can test the soil better than you can. :D

Did you test the soil in just one place or lots of places?

Could just be a rogue result if you only tested in one place, as DavidT says
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I always thought those weed plants were an indicator of fertile wet soil, not acid. ???

To do a soil test using the chemical test kits. You need to dig a hole about 4inches deep and take the sample from the bottom of the hole. Do this from 5 areas of the plot, 1 from each quarter and the fifth from the middle. mix all the samples together and test. The result will give you an average PH/NPK reading for the plot. One golden rule, you MUST wear gloves so as not to contaminate the samples. :D
