Thanks Peter, all info is good, the more  the better
I am to the stage of manufacturing techneques. The blades being one issue and I do not currently have access to a lathe. I often work on electronics so that side is fairly straight forward.
always have a target
and an objective.

hi i built a wind turbine and charge controller useing info from these three websites very easy to follow instructions..    http://www.mdpub.com/Wind_Turbine/   .http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2004/9/20/0406/27488   http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-1000-watt-wind-turbine/ hope these help p,j,  :) :)

Thanks for that Peter James, it answers pretty much all of the questions I've been wanting to ask for years.
Can I ask, how successful has your own project been would you say? Worth the initial expense? Happy with the results, cost notwithstanding?
Any obvious (to you now) pitfalls to look out for?

Thanks.....

the project was easy to do i have a vidio on my phone of it in action just have to figure out how to post it on hear .the blades were easy to make from 4 inch black loo pipe cut into four eaqal lenths then shaped useing plans on one of the links i gave. there not much louder than the wine its self .the most important peice is the motor you are looking for something with low r,p,m high watts and volts mine is 1500 r,p,m 400 watts 36 volts 7.5 amps and works fine . cost was low on my project as i had most things allready liying around .p,j  :)

Ok. Thanks for that Peter.
I'll be keeping an eye out for suitable motors, or rather, my friend will as he has access to all that kind of stuff as he's an engineer.
7.5 amps isn't a bad current to make considering you are quite literally plucking it from the air.
This is on my 'Jobs that most definitely need looking into' list.
Thanks again.
