Black rock suppliers South West
« on: August 30, 2009, 11:24 »
We are interested in Black Rocks as they seem to be a good hardy breed and possibly a bit more reliable than the warrens (from what I have read).  Does anyone know of a supplier of Black Rock POL's in the North Cornwall/North West Devon area.

Thanks

Hello, have you looked at the poultry pages at the top of this page? Click on there and you will find a section for poultry and egg suppliers. This is then broken down into counties - you may find one on there near you. I have a black rock and she is lovely - very nice temperament and a good layer  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks.  Couldn't find one through there to start with and then did eventually.  Apparently there are only a few people who are licenced to breed them and raise them!  The nearest one to hear is about 45 minutes but I guess the girls would be OK in a box in the car for that distance.  We would like a hen that is pretty to look at, hardy and will produce a decent amount of eggs, but not so many that they only live short lives.  I think we are realising that our Warrens becuase they give such high yield may not live that long and it seems a shame to use them so!  Look at me, I said before that we aren't keeping hens as pets but as egg producers and now prefering them to live a long life rather than have a high egg yield!  ::) :)

Remember blackrocks are also hybrids, mine has always laid 6 eggs a week - she is about 18 months old now. She made a wonderfull broody and raised my copper black marans. Mine is also joint top chook with her best mate a bluebelle - both are pretty to look at  :D

To make sure your black rocks really are black rocks, contact Peter Siddons through this link.

http://www.blackrockhens.co.uk/petersiddons.html

He will tell you the nearest people to you who have real black rocks.  there are a lot of people selling other chooks as BR's but aren't.
