moving asparagus, Is it possible?
« on: August 23, 2009, 07:55 »
I have some asparagus plants that have been in the ground for 2 years now. I have been very good and not had a sprout. The only problem is that I may want to move them as my hubby wants to have a couple of pigs  :) , and the sensible place includes some place where the asparagus are planted. So can I move the asparagus?? I would hate to have to wait another 2 years before eating them.   ???

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi, thanks for that, but it doesn't really answer my question. I am wanting to move existing plants, not plant new ones. Also, if I can do it, when is the best time to move them? Thanks

Hiya,
I moved one this time last year taking as much soil as I could and it worked a treat. I even cropped it this spring, although I took less than normal as the disturbance is bound to have some effect.
Seems fine. :)
Hope this helps.

As the plants are still quite young, I'd cut them back only halfway since they still need the greens to 'feed' themselves. Once they fully die off in late fall, then you can cut them away fully. Be sure to add lots of sharp sand to the new area for good drainage.
