Sleepy Yawning Chicken - Advice please!
« on: August 23, 2009, 14:51 »
One of our 8 ex batts (had them for 3 weeks), seemed very sleepy yesterday.  Not intersted in food though she did eat a little when it got cooler, about tea time.  Had some layers and a bit of willow herb leaf. Apart from that spent most of the day asleep in the far corner under the coop.

Comb is good colour, feathers growing back in, and up to now has seemed OK, though probably the most timid and antisocial of the bunch.  Don't know if she's laying, haven't caught her in the act yet, so difficult to tell.

Then last night she didn't go in the coop with the others, but roosted on the edge of compost bay.  Didn't want to leave her out, so put her in the coop, but in a pet carrier so she could be on her own, but with the others too.

Today, still not right.  She has eaten and pooed, so no blockages.  But still too sleepy, though possibly a bit more alert than yesterday......it is a lot cooler today.

But......today noticed her yawning.  Do chickens yawn when they are sleepy, or should I be thinking gapeworm?  Ground where the pen is will have had a peasant or two crossing through, so it is a possiblity.

Does it sound like gapeworm?  Might be coming up to worming time anyway?  Flubenvet?

Please advise, I'm not sure what do to do.

Thanks Ruff, will  order it today.  They must be getting about due anyway.

Last night she went into the coop of her own accord, and this morning up and about and eating.  So maybe just a bad weekend?  Been thinking about it, and her condition did conincide with me finding a very big, and thin shelled egg, just plonked in the middle of the run.  Not at all where they usually lay.  Maybe it was her, and she had a hard time of it.  Don't know.

Wondering if you a little off colour yourself Ruff?  No comments on my deliberate mistake? ::)

we have pheasants as well.

I found the egg last summer. Oh and get woken up in the early summer by Mr Cock Pheasant telling the whole world he is great at 5 in the morning.  Now there is a reason to get a gun licence.  I could go peasant hunting  Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.  SNORT.
