Mildew on peas, courgettes and pumkins. Help
« on: August 17, 2009, 19:49 »
I have a spreading mildew problem, Peas, courgettes and pumpkins at the moment.

I have sprayed with milk and water 1:4 but i'm wondering what else is at risk.

PSB?  sweetcorn? raspberries? leeks?  are all in close range and yet to crop,  if they are at risk i'd pull up the affected peas etc.

Are some plant susceptible and others not?

Any one confirm the milk spray works?
Liv.

Yes, the milk spray does work, but you need to do it every week.

I use 1 part milk to 9 parts water as then it doesn't smell at all either

Can you use the milk/water treatment on garden plants, honeysuckle for example? Hil

I haven't done, but I don't see why not. The immune booster effect could be the same.

I'd try it and see IIWM  :D

I have had the same problems with courjetts, which i believe is caused by the plant being to moist for too long and not drying out. The Mildue withh spread due to this. Courjetts can grow  and spead quite large and mine have over lapped each other therefore staying quite damp!

In my case, i have removed all the affected leaves and stems from the courjettes and i think they are starting to recover as i see new growth. I just hope its not too late.

Maybe some one else can confirm if my knowledge on this is correct or not?  as it is my first season growing i get different advice from many people

Good luck

Must be more complicated than that, because its been bone dry here for months, we only water cougettes occasionally (round the roots), and yet they're covered in mildew.
Strange.

I think that mildews are fairly specific so the one(s) affecting your  courgettes and pumpkins shouldn't be the same one that is attacking your peas.

Powdery mildew has been a big problem for me this year too - I'm still engaged in a war of attrition - milk mixture and plucking off affected leaves - but nothing else is affected other than the summer and winter squashes. Lost about half of my gem squash which is a disaster. Interestingly the worst affected are the ones growing under the sweetcorn, so there's probably a micro-climate thing going on.

Gave up on 'three sisters'planting because of reduced overall yields a few years ago, but still ran my squash under the sweetcorn. This year has made me decide to adopt a monoculture approach to sweetcorn/climbing beans/squash in future.

Regards,

SS
