Has anyone grown Saltwort...?
« on: July 10, 2009, 08:06 »
I picked up a packet of seeds from the 'exciting' section at my local Garden Centre. They are called Saltwort and says it is an Asian food similar to Samphire.

Has anyone tried growing this...? How did it turn out...? Any tips..?

I've only ever heard of saltwort that is a kind of scrambly shrub that grows (I think) in mangrove swamps

I'm ialso interested to see what others know here  :) too.

the native saltwort (marsh samphire) is lovely to eat but I can't see how you could grow it at home and get the salty crunch...

No, nor me. I love Samphire which is why the Saltwort interested me. Doesn't say much on the packet, normal sowing/growing instructions so we will see what happens.

Well, my Saltwort seedlings came up a week or so after sowing and have grown into little branching plants. They are suffering from overshadowing by the big bully courgette plants next to them but otherwise seem quite happy.

I have snipped off a few bits and eaten then raw and they do resemble Samphire a bit, the same succulent-style crunch but a lot less salty.

I am going to let them grow a bit more and see if i can get a proper amount off them for a few meals, think i will steam or blanch them and serve with some sea salt and lemon juice and pretend i'm eating samphire.  Yum.
