Blight and my Christmas spuds
« on: August 12, 2009, 13:25 »
My plot neighbour has very very sick looking spuds, looks like blight, toms are in the same state. I planted my Christmas potatoes and they have just come through.

Do I need to spray etc etc to protect them as its unlikely the neighbour will be back for another 3 months to look at it.

I didnt spray my earlies or main crops as I didnt realise I needed too, and they were all fine

If there is blight near you then I would definately recommend spraying

Please some answer this for us 'newbies'.

I just lost my toms to blight, and my potatoes were in a planter next to them!

I use Dithane but it is definitly not "organic".  Bordeaux mixture is the organic alternative.

PS you shouldn't need to spray early potatoes as you harvest them before the blight has started to become a problem.

I don't plant Christmas spuds but I would imagine it's a case of being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

ie Plant too early and they may come come up as I know plot holders here have & catch blight if the weather is 'blight friendly'.  New pots are more susceptible as well as their normal season doesn't normally have that issue.

Too late and poor colder weather may at that time of year check growth and the seed may rot.

I think it's a bit of good judgement and luck?

I wouldn't plant them in our area until mid September time.
Top tip for camping....don't go.
