My potatoes have been attacked by slugs and my carrots by some this called wire worm.  The guy on the allotment next to mine says he uses lime to stop this.  Does anyone know if this actually works and does it affect the growth of different veg.  Also, I'm trying to keep everything quite natural - I use my own horses manure (who are not on any medication) and this appears to work well.  As you can see I'm new at this!!!

 I would be careful about using lime in the ground you are going to plant potatoes in, as I think it encourages scab 

It is however beneficial to brassicas, if your soil is a acidic

re the wireworms and slugs: I've never heard that lime protects against either (but other no doubt will have an idea as well) Wireworms are usually a problem in soil that has recently been grassland, and of course potatoes are often the first crop grown when land is being claimed for veg growing 

Crop rotation usually helps control the population IMHO, and sometimes a green manure of agricultural mustard (which wireworms don't eat, will help this along too IMHO)

And as for slugs --- I wish I knew
