red onions
« on: August 16, 2009, 16:07 »
I have just pulled some onions for drying off and come accross some red onions which I planted next to them. They have been dwarfed and are very small although they have had shoots. I planted then from sets but they have only doubled in size. What went wrong and can I use them again next year as sets?

You will not be able to grow them next yeat as they will go to seed. No idea why they did not flourish.

Ask Ice!  I have seen her red onions and they were beauties!

As for mine, they did the same as yours.  One or two were small onions, the rest were tiny onions!

Sorry to hear that. I got mine from Wilko's as a back up in case my Rjinsbergers (my first time from seed) didn't do. They fell about a month ago and are currently drying out in my greenhouse. The size is good because I watered them more than in previous years (on orders from my OH) and only about 3 went to seed. Perhaps your supply wasn't of a good enough quality?? Could be a soil or feed problem? Mine just had blood, fish and bone when they were planted and nothiing else since.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

All my onions were planted in ground that had lots of my home made compost and some chicken manure pellets.  I might also have had a bit of luck. ;)

Mine were all OK too, both Red Baron and Sturtgart Giant from sets.

Good compost, plenty of water and a slice of Ice's luck too I reckon  :D

I've had two sets of onions (white) which did the same as per usual each year.  But this year, as well as the sets, I thought I would try growing from seed both white and red and bought them from Mammothonions (Robinsons), and they are cracking.  Really huge ones.  Even my garlic have done great - last year they were rather small and had also got rust.  This year, lovely.  I gave half of them to my neighbour as theirs didn't turn out at all. 8)
