Help what do i do?
« on: August 10, 2009, 20:31 »
I have potato blight so once i have dug the potatoes, burned the plants what do i do, do i need to burn the tubers too, and do i need to notify anyone? Sounds daft but i just don't know what to do now i have identified it.

Also does it mean i can't grow potatoes again on that spot? What causes it? What is it? - if some one could point me to a source of info i would reallsy appreciate it

 :( Gutted  :(
Kate

I left my tubers underground for a couple of weeks after cutting off the blighted tops and they are now in storage and look healthy so all is not lost if you act quickly.

If the tubers aren't mushy they'll be fine to eat but may not store well.

Next year cut the haulms off (leaves) and burn them but leave the tubers in the ground for a fortnight.

Have a read here  http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/potato/potato-blight.php for the rest of your questions.

You certainly don't need to notify anyone, but the viability of the spuds depends on a couple of things.

If the blight is caught in time then it doesn't travel down into the soil to infect the tubers.  If you did catch it early enoughm, then Plot22's actions are the right things to do - leave them underground for a couple of weeks after removing the foliage before digging them up otherwise you run the risk of infecting the tubers as you lift them.

If the blight has really taken hold, it may have affected the tubers and they will not store without rotting.

I would wait to lift your tubers for the recommended period, see how they are upon lifting, and then keep a very close eye on them once in storage if they seem ok.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As above but don't grow spuds there for as long as possible. In a rotation plan this is usually four years.

Thanks for all your advise. I cut the halum off and have burnt it, and dug my potatoes yesterday, some were mushy and nasty  :( but some seem ok. Have them sitting outside on my patio at the moment so they can dry off propperly and toughen the skins a bit beofre i put them in paper bags. Will be checking on them regulalry!

Not as bad as i though to be honest, thank you again everyone!
