growing hens
« on: August 12, 2009, 14:11 »
the girls must be around 14-16 weeks now but are nowhere near the size of the parents.  there rhode island reds, and at the min they look more like bantam size.  when do they stop growing, is it when the stary laying. im a bit dissapointed as there parents were huge birds. there on growers pellets, plus some scraps and bread now and again. what do you think

they will take a few months to get to their full size, mine are getting there at about 9 months.
the advise on the site is not to feed bread unless it has been soaked as it can expand in the crop and possibly cause problems.
leave layers pellets on demand, so they can eat when they want to and they always have a supply in the run.
treats and scraps only in an evening, so they are full of layers pellets.
lots of advice on the site of what treats to feed, as well as what not to feed.
mine do not like uncooked veg, but love cooked potatoes, cabbage and greens.
they have some mixed corn last thing at night to make sure they are full.
good luck

Another 6 weeks on growers will probs see them full size. I would leave out the bread and if they look like they are coming  into lay switch them to layers pellets.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

thanx i wont give them bread only as a treat from now on. they have some veg etc at night and the grower pellets are there 24/7 for them whenever they like. just supprised ther nowhere near the size of their parents, cant see them growing that much in 6 weeks tho to make the same size . are hens usaly the same size as mum in the full breeds or does it vary and you have some smaller ones
