Thanks everyone for all your advice.  I've found the name of a local breeder/supplier so will see what they have available & go and visit to see which ones appeal!

It's been really helpful to hear different opinions & also the point about hens having a finite number of eggs for their lifespan (a bit like humans!  ) is helpful, and that there are exceptions to the "rule" of what a particular breed is like.
