Presenting?
« on: August 17, 2009, 20:33 »
We have had the girls for two weeks now and I try to handle them daily to get them used to it. They are still very wary but I now have the knack of catching them. Tonight I had a bit of a scare when I went to pick up one of the Rhode Starsand she went to run away them seemed to squat with legs wide apart and wings slightly out.

First thoughts were "oh god, I've hurt her" as she was close to the wire and I tried to encourage her to move but she stayed in the same weird position. Second thought was she was laying an egg (they are only about 20 wks) but then I realised she must be "presenting". I picked her up and she was fine. She was also the last to go to bed and actually allowed me to stroke her when she was on the ramp. I think I have a new friend.

Looks like you may be having some lovely eggies soon then skywatcher! they start doing that squatty thing because they think you are a chappy chicken  :tongue2: so she will be ready to lay soon!

How exciting

Very useful when you need to pick them up to examine for lice etc. If I go for the straight grab approach, ours leg it, but if I just put my hand over their body without contact, two squat down and can be picked up easily. The other girl is either gay or is just not that into me

She did it again tonight. Result! Funny thing was one of the others stood over her while she did it. Perhaps she wants some too?

I was making someone in the office laugh about this today, now she clucks when I walk past her desk.

One of ours stomps her feet when she squats, it's really amusing :)
