how to make a trellis
« on: June 29, 2011, 21:36 »
Hi all I want to make a trellis out of 1" roofing battons that i can fix to my 1 metre high raised beds. Can someone please explain the best way to achive this. the beds ar 2 metres long an i refuse to pay the extortionate rate and garden centres when im sure i can somehow knock a couple up by fixing them directly to concrete beds.

Thanks all, hope someone can help :) :)
new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

Not hard to achieve, but hard to describe in words so that you'll understand. Here are some short Youtube clips (the main one and others down the side) which ought to give you a good idea by seeing the job in practice.

Meanwhile, having spotted the mandatory first draft spelling mistake.... ::)

I made a custom size trellis from 3/4" tanalised timber that the woodyard sawed lengthwise so they were 3/8" and then nailed them together with annular nails, after setting out using 3 or 4 6" spacing pieces... rather proud of it as I'm usually bobbins at that sort of thing

When nailing your battons together just make sure you keep measuring across the diagonals to ensure the trellis remains square.
The measurement each way should be the same.
When complete, screw an addition batton along the top edge.
This delays rot setting in on the cut ends of the battons.
This can be done on all sides but the top is a must.
Good Luck
