spraying with milk - info link attached
« on: August 05, 2009, 21:23 »
I have read on here several times that you can spray mildewed squash leaves with diluted milk.
 I did this today  :D

Question is: does this cure the affected leaves or just stop it spreading to new leaves?

Could someone let me know please?

.................. and it took ages as they spread over an area about 4m by 3m and have about 1m high leaf stalks in the middle too

To be honest SB I dont know for sure, but Id assume it would stop it spreading as its a thick layer so more impersive through the leaf pores

I'm not sure how it works, so looked up what I could. I've put a link here so that anyone else can read about it too.

It seems as though affected leaves can recover (if not too far gone  )........... I'll let you know how it goes.

I also see it is supposed to be done weekly

I would not expect the milk to do more than halt the spread of powdery mildew. The important thing is to apply the milk at the very first signs of infection and repeat it weekly to protect new growth.

The other two organic treatments, bicarbonate of soda and wettable sulphur will equally not cure but preent further spread.

I sprayed some milk and water on mine and it seems to have slowed it all down :D
Thanks

It's worked very well for me with both courgettes and cucumbers. Soem of them were totally on their last legs until I sprayed them (1 part milk to 4 water) and they made a great recovery!
