Mixed Harvest
« on: August 03, 2009, 08:24 »
Yesterday we dug all our onions, peas, garlic,( I know its late put I was late sowing it) and carrots.
We have had a good year with all of the above, except for the carrots >:(
I have lost every single carrot to carrot fly >:( This is the second year in a row that this has happened, dispite planting inbetween the onions and garlic
I'm now worried about the parsnips as Ive heard they could also be attacked by carrot fly, is that true??
Anyway this is the last year my plot will see a carrot.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

I have proved to myself in the past that inter-planting does not work. I get mixed reports from fellow plot holders about 2 foot barriers which seem to work quite well but not 100%. This year I have kept mine well sealed under enviromesh which has given complete protection. Fleece should do the same job if it does not disintegrate. Carrot fly are active until mid September.

I've used both sorts of barriers and can speak from personal experience to back up Salmo when saying that whilst a 24" barrier gives quite good protection, enviromesh is even better. No had one fly so far this year.

Yes, carrot fly can get into your parsnips. It's not so obvious that it's fly as it tends to present itself as canker as the wounds let this into the parsnip. For this reason I grow my parsnips alongside the carrots under the same protection.

Don't give up them Roll Roll, in my first year on this plot I skipped 3 wheelbarrows of carrots. I just make sure there was a physical barrier the next year.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I can do enviromesh as its about to be moved from the red cabbages  :D

Seen as mine only went in yesterday will I avoid the fly or is protection better even when threat has passed

I love enviromesh :D its worth every penny.I wouldnt even think of growing carrots without it after four years using it and no fly.
The fella next to me has a cold frame type box with clear plastic sheet over the top which he holes with a knife to let rain in,this also works well as he has good carrots.

I agree about barriers being the only way with carrots. Mine are fleeced as soon as they're sown and left on till the last carrots are harvested. I've had great carrots this way.
