Someone recently put a thread on here along with some pictures about a poorly hen. This hen had something else wrong with her but I was amazed at how nice her legs were. My speck Pat has had dry legs for a few weeks now and when I had a look at her today they hadn't got any scales on them I had read on here to put Vaseline on their legs.

Pat has got week old chicks at the moment so I knew I had got to somehow split them up so I could have a good look at her which I managed to do and we put some vaseline on them however, I just looked at them at they look WORSE! They look really very sore now and I feel terrible that I was trying to make them better and now fear I have made them worse.  It was traumatic splitting her up from the chicks I'd hate to have to do it again??

Has anyone got any recommendations???

Can't help with the legs but ref posting a picture here's how I do it. Save your photo from the camera as you would normally. Click on it to open it then click on the icon at the bottom of the photo that opens it for editing. At the top of the screen click on "image" and where it says skew/stretch reduce the size from 100% to about 35% then save it, when you save it rename it so you don't confuse it with the original. Then when you do a post on the forum click on the "additions" and "browse" until you find your new photo. it will appear small on the page until someone clicks on it then it will enlarge. Hope this helps.

i could be qrong but it looks like she could have scaly leg mite . vaseline will help to suffocate them an kill them of but u really need to get hold of scaly leg mite spray  it wil help loads  but some one else will be along soon to give more advice .

If it is scaly leg mite then treat as looby said. If she has lost her scales then you may have to wait until she moults before she gets her new scales.    xx

thanks folks for your advice. do i continue with the vaseline and for how long? she hasnt got any scales on her legs how long does it take for them to grow back??

Hi, Ivomectin or Panmec is good for scaly leg mite (they are the same thing) it's not licensed
for poultry so it's a 7 day egg withdrawal. I do know it takes a while for the scales to grow back. Nic.

It might be a good idea to rub vaseline into her legs daily....this will help with the dryness.....plus she'll love the massage!!!

she HATED it today - being split from her chicks! she went berserk  im not looking forward to doing that again tomorrow   

also her legs went red after i put it on is this okay?

That's normal. She might get used to it!!
