growing blueberries
« on: May 03, 2010, 08:42 »
Hi,
My son is crazy about blueberries and I would like to grow some.
Apparently they grow really well in Ireland, which surprised me as I thought they only grew in America :)
I have read that to get a good crop you have to plant two or more cultivars. There is only one type of 3yr old blueberry bush at my local gardening centre, would two of these work or do they have to be different varieties?
I know this is not a great time of year to plant them so I will leave them in pots until Autumn but the little man is only 10 months so waiting till autumn to buy them would be like forever for him :) We want fresh blueberries now.
Thank you.
Grow, dammit, grow.

I've got two bushes, both the same cultivar as far as I am aware in pots on my patio.  They have done better since I planted them in ericasous (sp) soil and I get enough berries from them to satisfy me.

Brilliant,
Thanks Wighty, I didn't realise I could keep them in pots for a while.
Could you tell me what size pot your are in?
What age are they?
I wonder would I get a decent crop from 3 year old bushes (son eats many 8 berries a day - I hate them  :tongue2:) I would love to have a few extra to freeze.
Thanks so much

They are four years old now and are in 18 inch wide pots.  I llift them out each spring and shake some of the soil off and then re-pot with some fresh and feed them with an ericacous(sp) feed.  I too only like them raw and eat a handful every day.  You do have to get there before the birds though! :D
