French beans
« on: July 29, 2009, 15:23 »
I've found them very easy to grow (climbing and dwarf), they are very prolific, don't get stringy and taste nice.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

My violet podded stringless climbers are about to kick in. I find you can leave them much longer before picking than runners and they don't suffer too much.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I planted some early cobra and i've had loads off them..just finishing now. Since the runners have started the cobra beans have been going in the freezer :)
Will have to have a good look at the violet podded now as DD says they're nearly ready..... Thanks DD :D

Mine have done VERY poorly this year.  Theres hardly a flower on them and the plants are very feeble.

I tried both Cobra and blue lake up wigwams from the 24 seeds planted , 20 germinated and I've still not seen a bean. I think the really hot weather then the bad winds really hasn't done them any good at all.

I put 12 more Cobra in cell trays last week, with the idea to put them in a more sheltered position asap - hopefully I may get a something this year. Last year I planted 1/2 my runner frame with them, but I don't think they stood much of a chance as the runners swamped them.

Ive got some that DD sent me and some I bought from Wilkos. They are both doing great and flowering

I love french beans, they have been so easy for me so far and very prolific (second year)

I think that's the key with Cobra, they don't like the wind! ;)

I've got 15 plants in the back garden (very sheltered) - We've been picking now for over a week, and yield is great (a fist full every day!)
