Onions
« on: July 27, 2009, 10:31 »
Most of my Onions appear to have fallen over, for the most part the stems etc still seem green and healthy.

It's been quite windy is it possible they arn't "done" but the wind has simply given them a battering??

The main reason im wondering is because they are all still quite small, mostly just abit bigger than spring onion/pickled onion which is quite disappointing as they where grown from sets so havn't swollen very much at all.

Have i done something wrong? should i pull them all and make the best of them?

A lot of my onion tops fell over about a month ago but the onions themselves are still growing and the tops are still green.  I am leaving them in the ground for a spell yet until they fatten up some more.  This is only my second year growing onions but they are already better than last year's results.  I could be talking complete rubbish but it's working for me this way

for me, the test is how sqidgy (technical term!) the stems are. If they are soft and easy to squwish (another techy term) thay are ready to lift. If they are firm, they are still growing.

Just my way - others may differ  :)
