I fool so feelish when I ask the old timers what's the difference between summer and winter cabbages. They look at me the idiot and just keep saying summer is summer and winter is winter.
Is there a one type for planting now to eat in the summer and a different type to plant in the summer to eat in the winter?
And if so which is "Summer Cabbage" and which is "Winter Cabbage"?
can someone please explain  :oops:  :?  :oops:  :?  :roll:  :?

Sorry but there are Spring Cabbages too!  Quick explanation with my own favourite varieties ...

Spring Cabbage : Greyhound or Offenham : sow in Autumn to harvest in spring  OR  sow in spring to harvest in early summer

Summer Cabbage : Primo / Golden Acre : sow in spring to harvest in summer / early autumn

Winter Cabbage : Marner Giant White, Marner Giant Red : sow in spring or summer to harvest in late Autumn / winter

Winter cabbages are also better keepers than spring, which should be eaten asap. The leaves of winters are tougher and less juicy for that keeping quality, thus needing a bit extra cooking time. Winters are the ones for making kraut as well.

 :idea: Well, having no experience or knowledge to inhibit us, we just planted the cabbages that Shaun gave me and within a few weeks they looked so enticing that we started eating the leaves raw and they taste so delicious that we're keeping on doing that and as they go will plant new ones in their place.
That way we can go on forever :roll:
By the way, the broccoli in the next bed - which are only a few weeks old also tempted me and I ate a couple of leaves ...... very tasty - a bit like rocket but more bitter. Hope they're not poisonous. Will they be OK if I keep on eating the leaves or do they need them to make the curds or whatever you call the white bits :?:  :?:

Eating the leaves will spoil the crop.  What are you mate, a caterpillar!!

i have a nibble off seedlings if a damage when transplanting or thinning out ,we are a strange bunch up here
