Not quite sure what you'd term "heavy crop", bit I do sucessive sowings of about 6' rows with about 72 plants per row!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What do you normally do with them?  Before last week sunday roast and stir fry was all I used them in, but then I had an unexpected crop and wanted to use them at their freshest, so steamed them for 2 mins, and tossed them with some toms I'd chopped, cucumber, red onion, fresh basil, parsley and chives, olive oil and seasoning, voila, a cheeky little side salad was born and you know what, it was bloomin lovely!!

What's the saying, neccesity is the mother of invention?  ;)

I wouldn't have thought that just 9 sugar snap plants would give you any kind of yield anyway ???

See here http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=37537.0

I know the thread is for ordinary peas but theory is the same, you're just eating the pods before they fill with peas. I find that Sugarsnaps are actually sweeter if you let the tiny peas grow a little before you eat the pod :) If you want really flat pods then I'd  buy seed that is specifically mangetout :)

I can recommend pea pod soup which i did with all the mangetout that had escaped me when my sowings were a little too successful! (They had grown on a little too far with discernable peas inside and stringy pods).  We were eating them whenever we were up there, on the way back to the kitchen, in salads, as dipping things for hummus, stir fries etc etc etc.  Am now freezing cos we cant keep up - but the soup is delicious, very easy  and freezable without the cream.

Yeah i know it won't give much but i only really use them as a filler with other veg,  12-15 pea pods a week would be plenty ... so thats only 1-2 per plant i would have thought i had enough for that?

I'd have thought so - I've been at the peas again today - (not one has made it to the kitchen), and I've had at least a dozen from my little plants, and there's plenty more on there. There are also lots of flowers on the mangetout, so hopefully lots of pods to follow

I'm picking magetout by the half carrier-bag.  :)

First time I have grown peas of any sort (apart from one unsuccessful try 4 yrs ago).

If it is this easy every time (?) I will be growing more varieties next year!!

Can anyone please tell me:
What is the latest date a successful crop can be grown from seed?

If you're thinking of now - you still have time - but beware of mildew.

I've tried at this time of year 3 times and got mildew twice. That's why I go for bulk early sowing/freezing, but I appreciate not every one has the space.

I think I grew mange-tout.... flat pea pods that we ate (?). I liked them as did my sister's family but my OH persuaded me to leave them for a couple of weeks - They make nice peas too it seems!!  ;)

We love mange tout but have difficulty finding a variety that stays "flat".  This year tried Carouby de Mausanne (?) and they certainly germinated well and the few pods we have had have stayed flat but very few flowers, plants died off early and we have had very very little from the first sowing - would the exceptionally heavy rains have affected them do you think?  Always thought all peas loved rain...Have put in another two sowings and again they are germinating well but I'm not optimistic.

What varieties would you recommend, Please?
