and the chair and sec are phoning around local people who we have been told own land, in the hope of maybe privately renting or doing it via the council.

I believe there's provision in the 1908 act for compulsary purchase/rent if all else fails. There are avenues available to those who don't take no for an anwser.

All the best
Reece
Give them a handful of seeds and you'll feed them for a day, teach them how to grow food and they'll be down the allotment nattering for ever.

Great to hear at last that a parish is being proactive!

We hear so many bad tales about how hard it is, councils dragging their feet etc etc

I hope it all works out as easy as pie for you Reece

Final update

Site now in full flow. All plots taken and starting a waiting list. All achieved in 15 months.
My advice to anyone who wants an allotment where there aren't any is do your homework, approach the council, work with the council, do as much of the work as you can yourself, set yourself a realistic timescale and pester when things start to slow up and don't expect it to be handed to you without effort.

Can't praise our council enough. All set up costs paid by the council, now handed over to an association for the day to day management.

Many plots planted with no room spare.  Can't be bad!!!!!
Just got to get agreement for sheds and chichen now.

I was just talking with a friend who's on a waiting list which could take 30 years at it's current rate! She has joined a local allotment forum who are both petitioning the council and actively searching for available land. They are hoping to borrow some land from a local rugby club, currently not being used. (Going by their recent performance anything behind the scoreline is unused).

Definitely worth keeping on at them!
