Persistent sour crop
« on: July 20, 2009, 13:49 »
One of our two chickens has had sour crop for 3 weeks or so and is off lay.

Other than that she appears to be well.  She eats, dust bathes and does the usual chicken type thingk.

Her symptoms are a soft distended crop, stretching neck movements and a croaky sort of call.

We have tried making her vomit and she is eating live yoghurt.

Is she likely to recover?

I very much doupt its is sower crop.
On major thing is she is eating and had lived for 3 weeks with it.
Is her crop very large and pronounced first thing in the morning? She should look (sorry for the thought) a one breasted woman.
What does her breath smell of?
If it is something dead then it sour crop.

Has she been wormed recently as it could be gape worm.

Just looking at this again
......stretching neck movements and a croaky sort of call........
How old is this bird?
I have a thought is she changing sex and becoming a cockerel?

Yes it is possible in the young.

i'm new to keeping chickens its been 5 wks...just read a reply from roughlee handled mentioning "one breasted woman"...well i have a buff orpington(bantam size) who looks like that, she's eating well and has been laying everyday for a week, so should i be worried about her lopsided look? it feels quite firm...she's quite greedy and i know she's had a toad and a frog from my garden and she always grabs the other ones worms
4 kids,3 guinea pigs 1 bantam buff orpington, 1 warrens and 4 silkies...oh and a fella that thinks i'm weird!

When you let them out in the morning her crop should be empty giving your hen a more normal even appearance, but as she eats during the day it will fill up giving her the one breasted look as ruff calls it. This is quite normal  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

She is about 18 months.

The contents of her crop do not smell that bad.

We will try worming her.

Should we worm the poultry on a regular basis?

Is it like that in the morning before she has anything to eat or drink ?

I worm every six months but always read the packet.

I use Flubenvet.

Aunt sally. Her crop is soft and distended at all times. If anything it is bigger first thing in the morning.

There is such a thing as slow crop which indicates a blockage but allows some food and liquids to pass through I think.

It could soon become sour crop though and lead to infection.

Have you tried a small amount of liquid paraffin ?

Personally I'd get a vet to check it out but it's up to you.

She has not laid for a couple of weeks.  She is not breathless hut her clucks are very deep as if she has a sore throat.
