Are my hens slackers?
« on: July 28, 2009, 10:57 »
I'm convinced my goldline is the only one of my 4 hens to be laying, despite the fact I was told by the breeder that they were at POL when I bought them a week ago.

Is there any way I can encourage the Rhode Island Reds to start producing?

I keep threatening them that they'll be sunday lunch if they don't start working, but I don't think they speak human.

HI Hairybear,  how old are all of your hens, in weeks?

Point of Lay simply means that they could start to produce eggs within a few weeks, although with some birds it can take longer.  It's a bit like humans; periods (sorry if you're squeamish) can start anything from about 11 years old to, depending on the health and weight of the girl, 16 years and there's no way of knowing when it will start until it does, and even then periods are erratic, so expect the same of your girls; they may start sooner or they may start later, either way there's no way of forcing them to lay an egg!

Sorry I aven't been back since, the day job has been pretty all-consuming.

I was told they were all about 25 weeks old (2 weeks ago), so should be any time soon???

could be.  certainly once they start laying it's hard (but not impossible) to get them to stop!

Just enjoy them and let them settle into their new surroundings and before you know it you'll have more eggs than you know what to do with!
