Potatoes
« on: July 22, 2009, 20:18 »
Probably one of those questions that has been asked so many times that eyes roll but how do you know when potatoes are ready to dig up. I planted some seed potatoes in growing sacks earlier this year. Thay have produced loads of foliage and have been flowering for the last couple of weeks. Is it when they flower that they are ready?

I apologise in advance for eyes that roll     ::)  ::)  ::)

Cheers

stock answer is no question is a problem, just ask -- no one's eyes will roll. And also furtle about and see how big the potatoes are, if a reasonable size then take them. Growing only really stops once foliage dies back,  and then usually as you dig the pots will be falling off the plant or be thereabouts

RichardA is right. Some books say they are ready when the plants have flowered but the reality is some varieties don't seem to flower, others flower and the spuds form afterwards. The best thing to do is get your hands in that soil and have a feel (furtling)! And once the lower leaves of the plants start to yellow, the growing is about over so you can dig them up when you're ready to eat them.

Enjoy!
