Strawberry runners
« on: July 20, 2009, 07:17 »
I planted a new bed of strawberry plants ealier in the year and got a small but worthwhile crop, and loads of runners. There were so many runners I cut them all off thinking I may get more fruit, but then realised the type of plant (christine) is about done for the year. Will my plants produce more runners, should I have left some? My second strawberry bed is made up of waif n stray strawberry plants, (i planted these to see if i got anything, instead of buying more) which didnt do good at all, should i replace these with a later fruiting plant, if so, what?

I am growing strawberrys for the first time this year.  The variety i picked was "Albion" which is an everbearer, ive already had quite a few strawberrys then most of the plants threw out runners most of which i potted on and gave away any that appeared later have just been removed, now there is a second lot of fruit coming so i'm chuffed.

So i guess im saying it depends of the particular variety, i have been told plants tend to only throw out runners once in a seaon but i dont know for sure.

Any runners potted up too late in the season won't give you any fruit next year ( as I have found out  ), so pot your runners up now and give them a chance to grow some good roots before winter comes if you want to get any fruit from them.
