Ok what now?????
« on: July 13, 2009, 14:58 »
Complete newbie to veg growing, but enjoying the success so far with some gorgeous peas, lovely tasty carrots, loads of spuds, lettuce and tomatoes.  :D

My question however is about my Red Onion and Garlic.  I am not quite sure when I should be taking the next steps with them and for that matter what to do with them next??

The Garlic leaves have started to go yellow....Should I pull them, if so how can I store them.  The Onions seemed to have 'grown themselves out of the ground' Should I leave them where they are and use as needed?? How can I store them?

Thanks for any tips.  :)

I lift mine when the stem near the onion bulb is soft and able to be bent over (or already has bent over). Dig them out rather than pulling so that you don't pull the outer skins off then lay them out in the sun for a week or so to harden off. Then I plait the leaves and hang them in the shed til I need them. Same for shallots. This year my garlic had rust so I cut the leaves off and dried the bulbs out and now have them in a cardboard box till I need them.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Hi, aelf is correct, as with your garlic lift when the foliage has died down and hang out to dry hang in a dry shed.
