Melons

I've got 2 melon plants in the greenhouse, they're doing really well, very big and lots and lots of flowers.  But, do I need to pollinate them by hand? I grew melons a couple of years ago, they did produce fruit but I can't remember if I hand pollilnated or not! Memory like a sieve :tongue2:

Erm, yes you are better to pollinate by hand... just take the male flower off, then rub it inside the female

Yes..as pumpkin patch says..the female flowers have a little swelling behind the flower where the fruit develops.

My melon flowered for 2-3 weeks with just male flowers. I thought I was missing the difference. The female ones were obvious when they did turn up though.
