think you're right, any black in the breast usually means a boy, the girls are much lighter :) :)

agree with foxy males are darker feathered.

Correct on both counts I think!!!!  Wish my Appenzellars were as easy!  Thought these 2 being the biggest were cockerels, but no sign of any combs or wattles and they are 6 weeks old now

looking at my 5 week old copper black marans I have got 4 males with largish combs and wattles and just 1 female, looks like 4 Sunday dinners as nobody seems to want them.

Thanks for the rapid responses :)

The birds look the same to me :wacko: white stripe on the breast on all, just two of them have a more pronounced comb.

I usually go by the combs on most breeds, but on new ones I keep what I think are cockerels just in case  :wub:
