Poor swelling of radishes
« on: July 10, 2009, 12:54 »
Last night i picked my first harvest (yum) of radished.  i was very disappointed to see that only 10% of them had actually swelled.  The rest just had a thickened and (and split)long stems which lay across the surfact of the soil.

The seeds were sown directly into the raised bed and all showed very good leaf growth.

Any potential causes?  Anything I can do next time to prevent this (planning on pulling all radishes tonight (lucky rabbits) and resowing in the morning.

Thanks

I have had this before, next time I sowed the seeds a planted them a little deeper than the packet said. I've also had them grow a bit straggly when they don't get good direct sunlight in the garden, it's as if they're trying to grow to reach the sun. As well as some good and consistent watering of course!

I'm sure someone will be along with a better answer soon!

I think temperature and moisture are the key.

I find they grow much better earlier in the season when it's cooler and damper and they don't run to seed as quickly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree.  My earliest grown radishes are always really good and the quality slowly deteriorates as the season goes on.  The first lot also managed to escape the dreaded flea beetle which is rampaged thru my beds >:(

This would fit in with mine, wonderful start susequent not worth talking about, flea beetle, gone to seed, non swelling, yellowed and died.  I started four years ago this has been one of my worst years so far for everything except spring onions and celery.

We noticed they have not been growing aswell as they did early in the season,  we thought it might be because they are a different type but look's like it could be to do with the weather.
Thanks
Kris
