will be ready to harvest my crop of regular charlotte tatoes within the next few months and am wondering if sweet potatoes will be good for growing in their place at this time of year for harvesting next year? i dont know much about them to be honest but would love to give them a try!

any advice on when to grow, where to buy or if i can chit them etc would be grand

Hi Check out earlier threads on this one. as I recall, sweet pots need a long growing season so best started for next year.

Sweet potatoes are started from 'slips' rather than chitted potatoes.

You can see that they only despatch them in spring - summer as I belive they are not frost hardy.  Therefore I'd be surprised if you obtained any now and it probably isn't worth trying to overwinter them.

I think there's been posts about growing them in the past, might be worth a search on the search facility
