I planted 10 also at the same time on the edge of a raised bed.
As they grew I mouunded light soil over them and the continued to grow through.
I Now have several spears per crown looking just like BQ's photo.
They should last about 15-20 years so it's early days yet.

I'm not sure about yellow roots - I certainly haven't disturbed mine, as its their first year and they need to build up strength so you can crop them next year. Mine have put up varying thicknesses of shoots too - from matchstick to pencil thick spears. Again its their first year, so I wouldn't expect broom handle spears. The ferns however have made them top heavy and they are falling over, so on the advice give on here I'm trying them up until they go yelow in the autumn.

I think asparigus is always a bit shakey in it's first year... Iv had several of my new plants' first spears go brown and break off, but more came up to replace them and they seem get get themselfs sroted out in the end.

Week plants are more subseptable to crown rot so make sure that the soil is not acidic... this years babys perked up wonderfully when they had a dose of lime!

:) eben with its teathing troubles...I still think aspargus is a fantasticaly good value crop and a must for any one!
