Out of control Kohl rabi
« on: June 28, 2009, 22:18 »
Hi,
Has anyone experience of rowing the supershmeltz variety of kohl rabi which is supposed to give bigger bulbs than other varieties. A couple of months a go I sowed some and it bears little resemblence to any pictures of kohl rabi I have seen, principally in that it seems to be all leaves and very little bulbs rather than a bulb with weedy leaves. The leaves are so large that they are swamping beetroot over two and a half feet away with the leafy parts (not counting the stalk) being over 2 feet long. At the same time all the bulbs are no more than tennis ball sized. Is this right or should this variety be more like other kohl rabis and if so any ideas what I could be doing wrong
Plus here is a picture of the monsters

Well, they do resemble kohlrabi leaves, but almost more like white swiss chard. But chard doesn't put out any sort of root bulb. Perhaps you were a bit generous on the manure or fertilizer on the kohl side. Decide which you want more and you might have to pull one or let the other get swamped. Definitely not something to plant in a shared bed next time. Sorry I can't be more specific with info.

Can't offer any advice but I do have a fantastic Kashmiri recipe for cooking kohl rabi leaves so if it comes to the worst at least you'd eat something.....

If you could post that it would be great as we are going to start pulling off leaves to eat. Started last night and 3 leaves gave 2 generous portions but steamed they are just like cabbage so anything to jazz them up will be brill, given the amount available.
Cheers

Ooh, choices  :D

I'd stick it in the Cooking & Recipes section under its own heading so it can easily be picked up by a search
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Righto, I'll do that after tea - beetroot & tomatoes cooked with onions & cumin, haven't had much success with beetroot so had to sling in a few turnips to bulk it up, turnips and mint cooked with coriander, I may possibly have got carried away when sowing the turnip seeds  :wub:spinach with garlic, beef dhansak & steamed basmati rice, all off the lottie except for the beef (obviously), the rice (although after seeing the amount of flooding we had there last yeart I was seriously thinking about a rice paddy), the garlic & the toms but early days yet :)

OK it's in the recipe section, I had it yesterday actually using the last of my sadly bolted pak choi but it didn't work quite a s well, too many stems I think  :nowink:

On the subject of making the best of veg that's turned naughty, I discovered that the stems of blown cauliflower are really rather nice, although you will need to peel them. Juicy, sweet and very tasty in stir-fries.

That would be a brilliant theme for a thread- interesting things to do with veg that's gone wrong! I need bolted pak choi recipes - i just can't grow that at all. And i always sow too many lettuce ....
