What would you do?
« on: July 25, 2009, 07:04 »
I recently lost all of my toms in my poly tunnel to grey mould  :(

My cucumber, pepper and chilli plants in there have been completely unaffected thank goodness.

My question is - What would you do now? would you forget it for this year, or would you try and grow something else in there? is it safe to do it after having grey mould?

I have a raised bed with plenty of other stuff but I thought it was a shame to have room in the poly tunnel and not put it to good use.

Any advice will be much appreciated - thanks! :)

hello, i have no idea but these are just some of my thoughts:

when you say grey mould, is this an actual disease or do you just mean they went mouldy and it was grey?
If its a real disease is it specific to tomatoes? (as you said the other plants are so far unaffected?
If it's just mould, could it be due to a lack of ventilation and the tomatoes happened to be in the least ventilated part of the tunnel?
mould = spores
what about spraying the inside of the tunnel fabric with a mould killer like you would use in a shower to kill off any spores?
be careful about transferring spores to other plants via your hands

all this is probably no help, but i'm interested in what others may think!

Apparently, it was Botrytis (grey mould). It was due to a lack of ventilation and the humid conditions that we've had over latter weeks.

I wondered about spores. If that is the case I probably should spray. I guess I'd need to take my other plants out, spray and dissinfect before doing anything.

As I said, my cucumber, chilli and pepper plants have been unaffected. I forgot to mention that I also have 2 gherkin plants in there - also unaffected.

Thanks for your advice.
