Fruit ID please
« on: June 30, 2009, 12:37 »
I thought that these were both damson trees - They look the same to me.  ::)

The fruit on the other hand look very different.

Can anyone ID these for me ?

Damson and plum perhaps ? No fruit off either last year if that helps.

Goodness me you have a heavy crop there!  Last year was terrible for stone fruit - even the commercial growers near us did not manage a crop.

I don't precisely know what they are.  Are they ripe? it is a bit early.  I think the proof is in the eating.  If they are really delicious raw you have a good variety of plum, perhaps Purple Pershore.  If they are on the sour side but superb cooked you have a damson.  However it would take a real expert such as those at Wisley, seeing the actual fruit and possibly the leaves  to identify the variety.

Cheers,

Gillie

Second piccy definately damson, as we have same in our garden.  1st picture I would guess at plums although didn't realise they all bunched together like that!!!  Good crop  :)
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

I don't think they're ripe - They don't look anywhere near as colourful as they do in the photos.

T.O.B.N.D. says ones a damson (picture 2) and the other is a yellow plum ?? I have no idea as you say proof of the pudding and all that. The trees themselves are in a terrible state very dishevel I surprised theres any fruit let alone the amount there is.  :D

"The trees themselves are in a terrible state very disheveled."

Plum trees get like that.  I would leave well enough alone but if you must prune them do it in the summer or early autumn when the cuts will heal quickly otherwise they may get silverleaf disease, which will slowly kill them.  (I have a tree dying of it at present).

Cheers,

Gillie

How big are the fruits on the first tree?

They look a lot like my mirabelles - 'sept I don't have that many on my tree  :tongue2:

Mirabelles generally look like cherry sized plums.

Damsons in the second pici, but I wonder if its greengages in the first - just a gut reaction, can't identify why and I've looked at the picis three times now
