blackleg potatoes
« on: June 14, 2009, 22:49 »
hi , i have found blackleg on one potato plant,

the plant was stunted with shrived leaves , a long black patch along the stem ,

all typical signs to R H S ,

ive dug the whole plant up , including the roots and growing potatoes, will be destrying them this week in my fire

i bought all my seeds from wilkos in hull ,

i will also be e-mailing wilkos with my complaint, not that it will do anything

just thought i should warn people about blackleg

Why would it be Wilkos fault Peter? On reading my Dr H, its planting tubers that are soft and rotten, or cutting them in half to allow the infection in.

Im sorry to hear it though..Id be gutted with mine

Don't waste your breath.

If you care to read on as to what the RHS has to say, it's impossible to detect in tubers. Therefore neither they nor their suppliers can really be blamed.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I thought I had it too, just on my first earlies, as they were stunted, yellow, didn't flower etc etc, but when I dug under them I found one rotten but the rest have lovely spuds so I decided to leave the rest in and hope it doesn't spread across the rows to my maincrop.

The rotten one was most probably your original seed spud.

Sorry what I meant was that there was one rotten seed potato, the rest of the seed spuds seemed fine.

Me too with two plants both Charlotte. First time I have had it.
All other plants are fine and have been in flower for a couple of weeks and I have been digging Lady Christl (not in flower) since 30 May with excellent yield and taste.

It clearly came in the seed potatoes not a big problem and not spreading.

A blue fog now hangs over my allotment as I Bordeaux Mixture spray the tomatoes against the blight. It's like dusk in a Hammer Horror film.

Just found this in 2 plants today. The seed potato was bought quiet late and cheep in a local garden centre and both had rotted away when i pulled the plant up yesterday. It doesnt seem to have spread to my other tubs/bags so fingers crossed.

My two rows of swift seem to suffer as well yellow leaves rotting stem on some just miserable looking on the rest- other spud varieties fine - they still managed to produce a good number dug up 5lb from two plants.
