Purple Ukraine toms
« on: June 27, 2009, 21:02 »
Anybody else growing these this year??
They are strange.........as tall as me (5ft6in) but with only 2 flower trusses
The black cherry, tigerella and ailsa craig are smaller but have 4 or 5 trusses on :) All growing in the same greenhouse border soil............so wondered if they are all like this

Hmmm - this is my 2nd year of purple ukraines and none got to 6ft. Perhaps you've got a quirk in yours - mine grew trusses at abut 2ft tall last year outdoors and the same seems to be happening this year indoors.

I think that is what they are like; I have 3 in the greenhouse (1.5m tall, 2 trusses so far) and one outside in a pot (1m tall, 1 truss). They also always look as if they are going to die with very soft and droopy leaves even when the other toms are firm. I am just putting it down to a very tall and unusually sift-leaved variety.

I bought a plant of Black Crim just for fun and planted it in the greenhouse along with various other varieties.  It too is a bit pathetic with only a couple of small trusses.

I am not sure that I will bother with Russian tomatoes again.

I once grew Purple Cherokee, which cropped OK, but looked depressing in salads and turned soups and sauces a muddy colour.  I am not fond of the pinkish tomatoes such as American heritage variety Brandywine either.

My black russian have done odd things this year. Strange growth and poor setting.

I've got black russian and a purple ukarine and they are both the height of the green house. Black r has four trusses that look good so far, purple u just has two and they are feebel weebel sorts.

Also have idli (2 trusses Ok) yellow pear (massive thick stemmed plants and medium trusses) and gardeners delight (normal size with four trusses) and a weird two that turned out to be bush toms but are fruiting best of all. Could be red alert?

Did wonder what I'd done wrong re purple one
