Lettuce

I planted T&M Romaine lettuce 'Chartwell'  that seems to be doing fine, have even put out already in bed.  They look strong.

Also planted Suttons Patio salads 'Little gem' but all of those planted at different times and in the conservatory are limp and pale,  experimented with some put in high rise bed and some in mini plastic green house, some still indoors.

My question is do the little gem always look so limp and pale, or is it maybe because the other lettuce romaine chartwell looks so good :?:

I am a great lover of little gems, what I find is they start of strong and you need to transplant quick, if left in the tray they do seem to die off, not sure why, the first lot I started I transplanted 15 in a bed early March under a cloche and they are growing great but I had around 20 more in the tray and within a couple of week they were dead. Another tip is to keep your lettuce seeds in the fridge, the seed goes dormant at 70 degrees.
By the way, what a fantastic county west sussex is, we were there a couple of year back camping in the witterings, great people so friendly.
Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

Thanks Aidy

Those little gems better buckk their ideas up or I won't be using them again.

Yep know the Witterings only 10 mins away.  Been here two years from Thornton Heath Croydon..................bit of a difference, so much to do and see.  Its luverly.  Local paper makes us laugh instead of shootings, muggings and stabbings you have 'residents up in arms footpath in need of repair' or police called to youths making a noise at 10.00 at night.

my little gems were awful last year and I have just sown some seed in trays and some straight into the soil at home. I think my problem last year is I don't cloche them so I have loads of fleece to cover them with this year...

I'm still waiting for my  little gems to show themselves, not sure where they will turn up to as kittens got into my cloche and rolled around scattering earth everywhere.

Nothing to do with lettuces but ...
Looks like theres an exodus from Croydon to West Sussex - we moved recently are are having the same sort of culture shock - no drive-bys in the local paper, just arguments about blocked drives! It's a whole different world. Have met several people recently who have moved from the same area too!
It was so nice to sit out in the garden last weekend and hear nothing, no police sirens, no ambulances, no police helicopters......
